Petersons Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America

Now that we have the internet it seems many people discount the value of books.
Why bother when you can look up just about anything in the world on the computer?

There are several reasons:
First a book is portable. Yes there are lap top computers and now the I phone but they both rely on a source of electricity. One is quite large in comparison and one is too small, just like Goldie Locks. The book is just right.

Then there is the questions of authenticity. Most books take time and a good deal of money to print. There are editors who make sure the information contained in these guides is as accurate as possible.
In some cases there may be mistakes but they are usually corrected in new printings.
As far as authenticity on the internet its anyones guess.

Web sites are routinely published with false information and often its opinion only. ( consider Wickipidia )
People are being led to believe that if the information is official looking, or originates from a popular site then its true.

Sadly this in not true and in fact there are web sites like truth or fiction and snoops that are solely dedicate to finding the truth about online fact and myth.

Beginning in the 1960 there was much talk about computers eliminating paper in our lives.
If this were true then why do I still have a library and file cabinets?

So we will continue to use the computer for its convenience and the books for their authority and permanence and beauty.

We consider theses books to be indispensable for birding.
There are 2 Audubon books, one for the east and one for the western US.
Obviously there are other good books available.
We have accumulated a large library of bird books just by
keeping an eye out at rummage and garage sales.
