We consider theses books to be indispensable for birding.
There are many other good books available if you look around.
We have accumulated a large library of bird books just by
keeping an eye out at rummage and garage sales.

It seems like more and more people are discounting the value of books, with so much information available online, for free.
Why bother buying and keeping books when you can look up just about anything in the world on the computer?
There are several reasons:
First a book is portable. Yes there are lap top computers and smart phones but they both rely on
a source of electricity and access.
Then there is the questions of authenticity. Most books take time and a good deal of money to print. There are editors and publishers who make sure
the information contained in these guides is as accurate as possible. In some cases there may be mistakes but they are
usually corrected in new printings. As far as authenticity on the internet it's anyones guess.

Web sites routinely publish false and inaccurate information and opinions. ( consider Wikipedia )
Folks are being led to believe that if the information looks and sounds official, or originates from a popular site then it must be true.
Sadly this in not true and in fact there are web sites like truth or fiction and snoops
that survive solely because of the proliferation of false information and urban legends.
Beginning in the 1960 there was much talk about computers eliminating paper in our lives.
If this were true then why do I still have a library and file cabinets?
So we will continue to use the computer for its convenience and the books for their authority and permanence and beauty.
